FW 8.2 Shattering Obstacles to Marriage

We cover a lot of ground in today's video of Pamphlet 8 of the original 1922 Fascinating Womanhood pamphlets. 

How to Shatter All Obstacles

"No matter what the objection that is standing in the man's way, it is only in this atmosphere that it can be overcome. For the sake of convenience, we have been calling the process of creating this atmosphere the 'castle-in-the-air' method.  It will have to be used constantly."  

Living with a man, or sleeping with him, gives him absolutely no reason to marry you.  THAT is a counterfeit marriage.

 

We cover what would prevent a man's proposing marriage to any girl under these subheadings:

When Money Blocks the Path (including debts), is the first subheading.  Regarding school loans - look up Completely Free Colleges, Sophia for undergrad classes, and Western Governor's University for less expensive degrees.

After I read about A Man's Secret Obligations, I discuss how to break off an engagement.  Breaking off an engagement with a man who really doesn't love you or who doesn't want to get married, or whom you really don't love, will allow the opportunity for another man to enter your life with whom you are better suited.

Pray for the man God has for you!  And only marry a committed Christ-follower, one who is want to seek the truth with you.

Next comes Discovering the Man's Health, which I end by telling the story of a woman I just met who convinced the man she loved to marry her, despite the fact she knowingly would become his full-time caregiver as a horrible disease ravaged his body over the next 15 years.

Should a Girl Wait? He will either speak out, drop out, or continue, knowing his obstacles can be overcome in time.  

 

Next we cover the second group of obstacles - what would prevent a man from proposing marriage to one girl in particular:

We discuss The Lovely Priscilla (the famous story of John Alden and Priscilla - if you don't know it, please look it up!).  "Now this situation is not so infrequent as one might suppose.....He may call on her a score of times with the intention of asking the momentous questions, only to lose heart at the last moment and put it off until another time."

In Ezekiel's Predicament I have to recite to you a terribly bad poem and answer it in the same bad poem How Huldy Handled Him.  Huldy used the Provocative Method, teasing him into speaking. 

The Fine Art of Teasing - It's a way of teasing the man, kindly, as Priscilla did, saying  "Why don't you speak for yourself, John?"  It is ladylike, modest, and irresistible.  Don't think that vicious teasing will work - it won't! Neither will sarcasm.

"Provoked until he feels like shaking the girl for playing with his tenderness for her, the man finds himself kissing her instead." 

Many times today it is the girl who leans in to let him know it is okay to be kissed. 

Too Proud to Ask Her involves money problems again, which can easily be overcome by an intelligent and thrifty housewife, such as we learned about with newlyweds Bettina and Bob in A Thousand Ways to Please a Husband (which, by the way, is now set as a course on my channel BeautifulHomemaking, along with Secrets of Fascinating Womanhood).  

I discuss that you must communicate to him, at the proper moment, that you are frugal, that you can be economical, that you won't drive him into debt, that you pay off credit cards, that you have no student debt, that you aren't a shopaholic, and that you are used to making do!

What to Do When His Family Objects There may be some obstacles you may overcome right now - learning formal manners, being more genteel and agreeable to fitting in with the family dynamics when around them, or perhaps even learning how to speak up for yourself and not get run over in the family, but chances are his love for you will override any objections, just like in the movies. 

Sometimes it doesn't matter who the woman is - someone in the family will be against whomever the man chooses, for selfish reasons of their own (they want him to remain single because it benefits them, they want him to marry someone else that they like, they want his financial support to go to them and not to you, they want to inherit what his future children would get [such as his share of their parents' house], they are afraid a wife will take him from the family circle, etc.).

Does the Lover Really Say, "WILL YOU MARRY ME?" is how we end Chapter 16.
